Orlando Minimum Automobile Insurance Coverage

Automobile Insurance companies now advertise so many "bells and whistles" it is hard to know what you should have and what is just fluff.  Do you need "pet coverage" or added roadside assistance?

Many times the added features are secondary to other services - for instance, you may have a new car with a warrantee that covers roadside assistance.  Paying extra to your automobile insurance policy may be a waste if it only kicks in after you have utilized any other services you already have.

What Coverage Should You Have

Let's stick to the basics.  You can add what ever else you like to your policy but these are the necessities.

Personal Injury Protection - the minimum $10,000 policy is required by law.  This money goes towards medical expenses and lost wages.  You should raise the limits of this to cover three months salary and medical expenses. A good number would be $50,000 and the minimum I would suggest is $25,000.

Bodily Injury - this covers damage done to another vehicle due to your negligence. The numbers vary between insurance carriers and I would suggest a minimum 50/100 policy.  That is $50,000 coverage per person/$100,000 per accident maximums.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage - believe it or not, there are a lot of drivers out there with absolutely no insurance at all.  Even worse, they are not personally wealthy either.  What does this mean? If you are hit by one of these people the only protection you have is with your own insurance policy.  However, your bodily injury does not cover you.  You have to add uninsured motorist coverage to your policy.  Usually, your agent will not press you to get it but you need to insist on it.  Match the coverage to the limits you have for your bodily injury coverage.

Things to be thinking about if you are involved in an accident

Where did the accident occur?  Were the police called?  Was a report filed?  Did you exchange insurance information? Have you contacted your insurance company?

Those are some initial questions we will need to know.  In addition, we will need to see the following if you have them - if not, we can still help.

  • Name of insurance carrier and policy number.
  • Name of family doctor if you have one.
  • Name and policy number of health insurance.
  • List of all injuries sustained in crash.
  • Accident report.
  • All traffic tickets given to you.
  • Name of other driver's insurance company.

DID YOU KNOW

  • Your personal injury protection (PIP) coverage will pay for 80% of the first $10,000 in medical expenses.  If you are not at fault this may be more.
  • Treatments not covered by PIP or your health insurance may still be available.
  • Uninsured Motorist Coverage you may have in your insurance policy covers the additional costs of damages caused in car accidents by drivers with no or little insurance.
  • Even if you are cited as "at fault" you may still be able to recover.

Keeping the Costs Under Control

Shop around - there are many insurance companies out there all competing with each other.

Make sure you understand exactly what you are getting with your policy.  Read it and review periodically.

Before settling on coverage, ask how much it would be to increase coverage to the next higher level.  You may be surprised to find that the increase cost is minimal.
